About Us
The voices behind the podcast
Our names are Tania and Vanessa, and we are two young Aussie women passionate about media literacy.
Tania is currently training to be a secondary teacher in the areas of English and History, while Vanessa is an International Studies graduate who specialises in the non for profit sector. Tania usually provides the history, Vanessa provides the politics, and when put together you get a snapshot of the important events that helped shape Australia.
We’ve also been friends for around 10 years now, and this podcast comes from a lot of love and respect.
Our Mission
Why we began the podcast
We began Australia, Explained amidst a turbulent 2020.
Our relationship with our country has never been so important. The unprecedented crisis of COVID-19 skyrocketed interest in the news - people wanted to stay informed about the health crisis, changing government policies and rising social tensions.
From talking to friends and family, we discovered a lot of people didn’t feel equipped to discuss issues happening in Australia and didn’t know much about Australian history. The theme of the year seemed to be staying informed, but that proved difficult when bombarded with different news outlets, social media posts and issues emerging on a day-to-day basis.
We realised there were lots media outlets focusing on international issues, but nothing that helped Aussies specifically. We decided we wanted to help people understand how our country functions and what it’s built on.

Enter Australia, Explained! Every Wednesday we drop a short, sweet and simple episode that covers a major topic, issue or debate currently being held in Australia.
These might be things you hear being discussed in the media, but don’t necessarily know much about. We’re here to provide you with all the background info and context you need to stay informed. At the end of every episode, we’ll offer a few recommendations that you can use to find out more and research further.
This is the perfect podcast to play in the car, in the morning when you’re brushing your teeth or when you don’t have time to flick through the news. Australia, Explained is easily digestible - we break down all the key words and key players that are involved so that you easily follow along.
Think of us as that friend you go to when you don’t understand what the hell the news is talking about!
